Filmmaker Statement

In times of uncertainty and fear, I find myself looking to the past for examples of inclusivity, bridge-building, and cultural healing. For the past six months, I’ve been immersed in the remarkable legacy of Camp Woodland—its beauty, bravery, and lasting impact on those it empowered.

Now, more than ever, sharing this story feels urgent. Camp Woodland’s legacy of resistance and civic engagement offers a powerful lens through which to examine today’s struggles for social justice. By drawing connections between past and present movements, this film will highlight how grassroots efforts have long fought against racism and fascism.

The camp’s commitment to diversity, cultural preservation, and progressive education stands as a hopeful counterpoint to rising intolerance. Featuring former campers who became activists and historians, this documentary will showcase the enduring influence of radical education and civic responsibility. More than a historical reflection, it is a call to action—a reminder that democracy, tolerance, and collective responsibility are not just ideals but urgent necessities.
